4 crore people are leaving 2G every year : Still 40 crore 2G subscribers in the 5G era

New Delhi: 5G mobile services have started in the country. Four companies Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Adani Data Networks have bought spectrum to provide 5G services. Jio and Airtel have already launched 5G services. While India has entered the 5G era, there are still 40 crore people who are using 2G mobile services. How they will use 4G or 5G services is the biggest challenge. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report, there are more than 115 crore mobile subscribers in India.

In 2021, about 4 crore people using 2G switched to 4G services. If the work continues at that rate, it will take 9-10 years to bring the current number of 2G users to 4G or 5G. 2G users buy feature phones. They don’t use smartphones. 2G customers change phones on average every three years. Every year 6-7 crore feature phones are sold in the country. Their prices start from Rs. 800. Those customers will have to spend at least Rs 4000-5000 to buy a smartphone to use the 4G service. Perhaps for this reason, most 2G customers are reluctant to upgrade to 4G. According to a survey of 187 countries by the World Wide Web Foundation, the price of a smartphone in Asia is close to 40 percent of people’s monthly income. While the global rate is 26 percent, North America has the lowest rate of only 2 percent.

Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced to make India 2G free. His company, Reliance Jio, also launched its own 4G feature phone. But it was not very helpful in taking 2G customers to 4G. On the other hand, another constraint in this sector is the monthly recharge price. 4G service costs at least Rs 250 per month. At that time 2G service is available at Rs.150 per month. Older people in the country who do not know how to use smartphones or do not find them easy to use are using 2G feature phones.
