There will be 800 km long corridor will be built for elephants

New Delhi: In order to reduce human-elephant conflict, an important decision has been taken by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Union Railways to facilitate the movement of elephants. 800 km long corridor will be built in the country for the movement of elephants. The construction of the identified corridor will be done jointly by both the ministries. The main objective of the project is to provide a safe route for elephants to move from one place to another.

Several meetings were held by the Union Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Railways to prepare the outline of the project. According to the Ministry, 1800 km route has been identified for the safe movement of elephants. Due to the defects in these roads, elephants are changing their routes and are moving towards human settlements and causing damage to people and property. Defective routes will be repaired and watercourses along the corridor will be revived. Not only that, along with the construction of corridors for elephants, priority will also be given to elephant census in the country.

Elephant Information App has been developed by the Ministry. The central government will soon get the information of all the elephants of the country through this application. The above two decisions will have special significance for elephant-rich states including Odisha.
