Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala jail on April 1
New Delhi: Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala jail on Saturday. In this regard, a tweet from Sidhu’s official Twitter handle has given information. This tweet has been made on the basis of information from the jail authorities.
Sidhu’s lawyer HPS Varma said that according to the Punjab jail manual, the prison sentence of a well-behaved prisoner can be commuted. On this basis, there is a good chance that Sidhu will be released from Patiala jail on Saturday.
In May last year, the Supreme Court sentenced Navjot Singh Sidhu to one year in jail in a 34-year-old murder case. After the party’s defeat in the state elections, Sidhu resigned from the post of Punjab Congress president.
On 27 December 1988, Sidhu had a dispute with Gurnam Singh, a resident of Patiala, over parking. Navjot Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu dragged Gurnam Singh from his car and hit him. Gurnam Singh died later in the hospital. However, an eyewitness revealed that Gurnam Singh was killed by hitting his head.
Earlier in 2018, the Supreme Court acquitted Sidhu in this case. But the victim’s family pleaded for reconsideration of the case.
